誰も知らない / DARE MO SHIRANAI - HIROKAZU KOREEDA [FILM, JAPANESE 2004]

BASED ON THE WIDELY DOCUMENTED CHILD ABANDONMENT INCIDENT THAT TOOK PLACE IN SUGAMO (TOSHIMA-KU), TOKYO IN 1988, KNOWN AS "巣鴨子供置き去り事件" (SUGAMO KODOMO OKISARI JIKEN / SUGAMO CHILD ABANDONMENT INCIDENT).

NOBODY KNOWS TELLS THE STORY OF 4 CHILDREN'S BID FOR SURVIVAL AFTER BEING ABANDONED BY THEIR MOTHER.

COY'S RECENT WORK LOOKS TO EXPLORE OUR INCREASINGLY DIGITIZED RELATIONSHIP TO THE PHYSICAL WORLD. FROM 2000, AND THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE ENTIRES EARTHS SURFACE HAD BEEN PHOTOGRAPHED DIGITALLY, COY STARTED TO CREATE LARGE PIXEL BASED SITE SPECIFIC WORKS. WHEN A SITE WAS FOUND, HE WOULD THEN RE-MAP THE EXACT LOCATION ON GOOGLE EARTH, SELECT THE EXACT SERIES OF PIXELS FROM THE SPACE AND INSTALL IT BACK TO THE LOCATION.

THESE SITE SPECIFIC WORKS, ALONG WITH 'OMEGA' (TRINIDAD 2004) CRITIQUED OUR INCREASINGLY DISTANT RELATIONSHIP TO OUR EARTH AND TRADITIONS.



'TEST SIGNAL' (2006) SIMILARLY TALKS OF OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DIGITAL. A CHOIR SINGS A 440HZ (OR CONCERT A) TONE TO MIMIC THAT WHICH BROADCAST TECHNICIANS USE TO VERIFY SIGNAL ACCURACY. WHEN THE CHOIR REACHED THE CORRECT PITCH, THE COLOURS ARE ACCURATE, AS THEY CAN NO LONGER HOLD THE EXACT NOTE, THE COLOURS WILL DEVIATE.

CONTRASTING TO THE DELICATE APPROACH ADOPTED IN THESE WORKS, IN HIS 2003 DRUM LECTURE COLLABORATION WITH DAVE CARBONE "REMINISCE THIS", COY TAKES ON THE GUISE OF THE FALL FRONTMAN MARK E SMITH.











CARBONE TWATS AWAY AT THE DRUMS TILL HIS ARMS GIVE UP, FORCING COY TO SPIEL VARIOUS DISCONNECTED AND SLIGHTLY HUMOROUS BEAT POETRY INTO THE MICROPHONE.

AN ARTIST WHO COULD SURELY STAND A VERY GOOD CHANCE IN A LAW SUIT AGAINST IKEA FOR THEIR VARIOUS 'ART CANVASES AND WALL PAPER DESIGNS.



I FEAR MORRISON'S WORK WOULD HAVE HAD A LARGER IMPACT WHEN HE FIRST STARTED WITH THE BLACK AND WHITE LANDSCAPES IN THE LATE '90S, BUT IT IS EQUALLY ENJOYABLE TO SEE VECTOR-LIKE REPRODUCIBLES BEING EXHIBITED IN SUCH HIGH STATURE SPACES.

MORRISON HAS CARVED A SLICK NICHE, MIXING HIGH SCIENTIFIC BOTANICAL, ARTISANAL LIKE DRAWING WITH THE LOW ARTS OF THE CARTOON.

HIS WORK PERHAPS INHERITS A CRITIQUE FROM OTHER WORKING ARTISTS DUE TO ITS REPRODUCTIVE NATURE, CONSTANT USE OF SAME IMAGERY AND HIS COMMERCIAL SUCCESS AND MARKETING CHOICES.

VERY INTERESTING AND UP-TO-DATE APPROACH, LAUSCHMANN EMBRACES THE 'CATCH ALL' CREATIVE THAT SEEMS TO BE QUITE THE TREND IN NEW AND DEVELOPING ARTISTS NOW. DIPPING IN AND OUT OF GALLERY EXHIBITIONS, FILM MAKING, LIVE PERFORMANCE, THORSTEN INVESTIGATES THE UNDERPINNING MECHANICS OF OUR HIGH-TECH WORLD.

HIS WORK UTILISING MAX MSP AND IMAGE/MOVEMENT ACTIVATED CONTROLLING WAS VERY INTERESTING, AND A GREAT THING TO DEVELOP FURTHER IN EXHIBITING ART.

"COLD WATER QUARTET" USES FISH AND A VIDEO LINK TO STIMULATE SOFTWARE INSTRUMENTS AND PLAY MUSIC. 'SINGLE FISH' ON BASS, 'SPECIAL FISH' ON PIANO AND 'ANIMAL' ON DRUMS.

"MOTHER AND CHILD" PROJECTION ONTO GOLD SURFACE.
THE WORK IS A CONTRADICTORY MOVING, STILL-LIFE. A BEAUTIFUL WORK SHOWING LAUSCHMANN'S WIFE AND NEW BORN SON SLEEPING ON A BED. FRAMED AND DISPLAYED WITH A NOD TO RELIGIOUS IMAGES AND RENAISSANCE PAINTING, CONFLICTS WITH THE BABIES DELICATE AND ERRATIC BREATHING.

ANOTHER VIDEO BUFF, BUT THIS TIME WITH FAR STRONGER CONTENT.

THOROUGHLY ENJOYED 'SIMILAR TO NOTHING' (2005), A COLLABORATION[?] WITH STEVE DUTTON, WHERE TWO SCREENS SHOW THE SAME FILM TWICE, RUNNING 8 SECONDS OUT OF SYNC WITH ONE ANOTHER.

LIKE A VISUAL DYSLEXIA AN INTERESTING DIALOGUE WAS FORCED ON THE VIEWER

IF YOU MISSED A PART, ONE COULD RE-FAMILIARIZE 8-SECONDS TO THE LEFT, BUT WOULD THEN LOSE THE PLACE IN THE STORY TO THE RIGHT. FORCING FOCUS TO THE 2ND SCREEN UNTIL ENOUGH COURAGE IS MUSTERED TO FILL IN THE BLANK AND JUMP TO THE NEW.

IM VERY INTERESTED IN WORK THAT FORCES AN ENGAGEMENT ON ITS VIEWER. WE HAVE GROWN LAZY IN THIS MODERN AGE AND I FEAR IT IS THE ONLY TRUE WAY FORWARD TO CONVERSE TO THE MASSES.

GOOD WORK, BUT ID LIKE TO SEE MORE NAKED CHICKS.
